Generation Scotland
is a large, family-based research study designed to investigate the genetic and environmental
determinants of health and disease. Participants contribute questionnaire data and biological samples,
which are linked to NHS health records and enhanced through laboratory-based analyses. Together, these
data form a rich resource for population health research.
Originally established as the
Scottish Family Health Study (SFHS)
, Generation Scotland recruited participants between
2006 and 2011
through GP practices across Glasgow, Tayside, Ayrshire, Arran, and Northeast Scotland. During this phase, participants completed
baseline questionnaires and attended clinic visits for blood sample collection.
The most recent recruitment phase,
NextGenScot (2022–2025)
, expanded the cohort through an online data-collection platform and remote saliva sampling. This phase
added over
16,000 participants
, with more than
10,000 saliva samples
collected for genomic analysis, alongside extensive new phenotype data. Existing Generation Scotland
participants were also invited to take part, resulting in partial overlap between cohorts.
