Use this tool to explore the phenotype data available in the Generation Scotland resource and to prepare your data request applications.
Search by cohort to view subsets of participants, including the baseline data collection and GS recontact studies. Variables are grouped by topic for easy selection. Use the search box to filter by keywords. Once you have selected the variables, you can copy them or download the list as a TXT file and include it in your data request application to specify your data requirements.
Further information about each cohort can be found on our website. To see the full list of variables please review our full data dictionary.
Generation Scotland is a large, family-based research study designed to investigate the genetic and environmental determinants of health and disease. Participants contribute questionnaire data and biological samples, which are linked to NHS health records and enhanced through laboratory-based analyses. Together, these data form a rich resource for population health research.
The cohort recruited participants through two main phases: GS initial recruitment (2006–2011) and NextGenScot (2022–2025) , totaling over 40,000 participants.
Participants gave broad consent for the future use of their data and samples in medical research, including permission to be recontacted for additional studies and data collection. Data from sub-studies may be requested by other researchers, and variables collected during recontact studies can be viewed here.
